A symbiotic spirit dance to heal the collective soul

My heart reading today is a question: are the heartfelt prayers each of us make from our one being, our one breath, offerings to the vast expanse of the spirit world … and are the dreams and insights each of us receive, uniquely and simultaneously offered from the one breath and unified body?

  • A line from a film about a woman returning to Egypt (Luxor) resonates so deeply: “the more unstable the world is the more the supernatural comes to the forefront.”
  • A scene from this film — when the main character finally let loose (she’s a surgeon-aid worker who’s seen much suffering) and did a little contact improv dancing in the hotel bar — reminds me of the only poetry line I’ve written that I can remember (heartbreak shatters the shell around the heart and awakens its capacity to love).
  • The treatment of this woman’s hotel room door withholds experience from the viewer so that in the moments when we are let inside her room, we appreciate it more.
  • Two sound moments of this film gave me an experience watching TV that I’ve never had — twice — the camera lingering with wonder at the night sky long enough to enjoy the cicadas while I am being serenaded with their song outside my windows. Their song sung across the street or across the world is the same beautiful song! Such unity!

Each of these points is a spiritual practice.

The last thing I’d like to share about this movie is the flat affect of the protagonist. She, aside from the brief “inappropriateness” she displays in the hotel bar, has such a blasé or neutral disposition that we know very clearly that she is carefully guarding her sensitivities.

To cultivate skill in feeling is to welcome the heightening of senses — to welcome becoming more sensitive. I am afraid of becoming more sensitive. And yet the alternative neutrality or numbness is unacceptable.

Can you feel the spiritual energy rising up alongside the climate catastrophe our global leaders are attempting to reckon with?
